+ The Marketing of Cigarettes

The UK government is considering introducing plain packaging to tobacco packs, in an effort to deglamourise smoking to children. According to health secretary Andrew Lansley, "The evidence is clear that packaging helps to recruit smokers, so it makes sense to consider having less attractive packaging".

It's all a far cry from tobacco's consumerist heyday in the 1950s! The news coverage surrounding the proposed changes to tobacco packs got me thinking about the alluring adverts created by tobacco companies in the past, so I thought I'd post a few examples:

Vintage Catalog features some interesting smoking adverts, including an advert featuring Amelia Earhart, and another personifying the Earth as a 'happy customer!

Personally, I don't think that changing the packaging of cigarettes will deter young people from lighting up for the first time, but it's worth a shot. In contrast to the smoking adverts above, an article featuring the top 45 creative anti-smoking advertisements from The Design Inspiration shows how the power of the visual can potentially prevent people from smoking in the first place! One example is of this

+ Hot cinnamon or hot mess?! - Schwarzkopf Live Color XXL

When debating dying my bleached blonde hair red, I did some searching online and couldn't find much information or help. I went into a hairdressers and they offered to charge silly amounts to dye my hair a semi-permanent colour that would fade after a few weeks... so I decided to just go for it and see if it worked!

I walked into Superdrug, and anyone who has ever tried to choose between all the brands will know it's not easy to choose which brand is the best. I settled on a shiny new shade called hot cinnamon by Schwarzkopf Live Color XXL as part of their new Hot Reds range.

I was aiming for the colour exactly like the one on the packet, and it went a few shades darker! It's nothing like I thought it would turn out, however I'm going to keep washing it non-stop until the colour starts to fade.

As you can see from the expertly-taken picture above (ha!) my hair has gone a LOT darker than the colour indicated, and in daylight my hair looks a dark cherry colour. I left it on for thirty minutes so I would advise anyone dying light bleached blonde hair to maybe shave a few minutes off of the developing time. This has happened to me a couple of times with hair dyes and it must be because of how porous bleaching your hair makes it.

So, let's hope in the next few weeks it starts to fade a little because I never intended it to be so dark!

+ Blonde, brunette or redhead?

I seem to have this seven-month itch when it comes to my hair colour. I like being blonde, I like being brunette and it seems only logical that I try out being a redhead! In the last five years I've been blonde, brunette, blonde, brunette, blonde, brunette, black-haired (mishap in South America with the hair dye!), and now blonde again.

Platinum blonde

But now.... I need a change. Here are some of my potential colour inspirations, Florence Welch and Ashlee Simpson when she had red hair:

Should I change my hair colour (again)?? I feel like just buying some hair dye and seeing what happens, but on the other hand at least if I shell out the cash at a hairdressers I can guarantee it will look half decent! When you're blonde or brunette you suit most things, but will everything start clashing with my new locks if I go full-on siren red?!

+ On the hunt for the perfect fur coat

Ever since the cold snap settled over England a few weeks ago, I've been trying to find my dream fur coat, preferably fur although I am willing to wear vintage fur (for the record I wear leather so I'm not about to get on my hypocritical high horse about wearing fur).

Fur Coat Wishlist....

+ It needs to be shaggy and 1970's boho like Kate Hudson's character in Almost Famous:

+ I want it the same texture as Kate Moss' Groupie Fur Coat from her Topshop Collection (and now selling for twice the price on eBay):

+ I'd love a coat similar in colour to Alison Mosshart's coat below:

How to do a fishbone plait

If I get bored i just decorate my hair with the generic plaits, but this fishbone plait is a great way to give a common-place hairstyle a unique spin.

Pin-up Hair

Pin-up style hair always looks too complicated to pull off, but with the help of a Youtube video, vintage glamour is yours!

Two-tone hair

Garance Dore

I absolutely love the way this girl's hair blends from brown to blonde. I'm constantly flipping between brunette and blonde, so this is a good compromise!
